All SMSF advisers are faced with a common problem. How to access current information on their clients’ SMSFs at minimal involvement and cost.

Where SMSF clients use the services of a local accountant, the adviser’s cost is minimised but there is a general lack of current information available to facilitate proactive planning as well as a lack of high-level technical expertise to call upon. Professional SMSF administrators satisfy the currency of information and technical requirements and, in our case, also provide a suite of additional value adding services – but advisers can be called upon to be more involved in administrative issues than they’d like.

We are a business-to-business SMSF service provider. Our primary contact point is the adviser, with many advisers demanding that we do not have direct contact with their SMSF clients. There are advisers, however, that want the benefits of dealing with a professional SMSF administrator but do not want to be materially involved in the administration process. Essentially, all queries we raise go to the adviser first. Many relate to issues with which the adviser is heavily involved such as contributions, withdrawals, pensions and investments but many do not. The adviser can choose to answer a query or invoke the Link option which refers it to the trustee who can then deal directly with us in a three-way conversation where the adviser can comment or take the passive role of spectator whilst the query is resolved by the trustee and SMSF Alliance directly. At all times the adviser is in control, fully informed and can become involved as little or as much as they wish.
